WHY CHOOSE GREEK YOGHURT?

Smoother and creamier than most other yoghurts as well as a great source of protein. Using 2.5lt milk per kg but it boasts an impressive nutritional profile.

Greek yogurt is becoming increasingly popular across SA. Sauces, smoothies, snacks, desserts and well-loved for its nutritional value make Greek yoghurt a staple in your kitchen!

WHAT IS GREEK YOGHURT?

Greek yogurt is a fermented dairy product like regular yoghurt but the process of making it is very different. Greek yogurt is filtered and contains less water. We filter out the water of 2.5lt milk to get 1kg of yoghurt.

We strain the yoghurt and let gravity to the work the same way it was made in Greece many, many years ago.  Smoother and thicker than traditional yogurt

HOW TO SPOT REAL GREEK YOGHURT

Do check that the label says Strained yoghurt : Which is the process of making traditional Greek Yoghurt. The straining process filters out he water. So Greek Yoghurt contains less water, which gives it its incredibly creamy thick texture. Commercial yoghurt adds starches and thickeners to bind the water. Making it a cheaper product to produce

Do check that the yoghurt has a high protein content : More than double that of regular yoghurt over 5g per protein per 100g

It should have as simple ingredients as possible.

In the case of the Gourmet Greek Plain Yoghurt range has only use milk, selected yoghurt cultures and a natural preservative (natamysin). Our Plain Yoghurt range is free from Starches, Stabilizers, Flavoring and added sugar. If the yoghurt has starches, thickeners and protein added it more than likely is not Greek

The yoghurt should be thick in texture : If you have tried a spoonful of the Gourmet Greek yoghurt you know that it’s rich, thicker and creamier than most other yoghurts. If its runny the filtration/straining process has not been done properly or it is regular yoghurt

Look up the company producing the yoghurt.

DONT’S

1. Don’t just buy it because it says “Greek” on the label or “Authentic” or “Genuine”

2. In South Africa we are not allowed to label yoghurt Greek or Greek style yoghurt.

3. Don’t fall for the beautiful pictures of Greek islands or the Greek columns

Or just look for a Greek family making Greek Yoghurt the same way it was made in Greece many, many years ago.
