OPERATIONS MANAGER – FOOD PRODUCTION
About The Role
Location: Lions River, KZN Midlands
Position: Full-time, on-site
Reports to: Managing Director
The Gourmet Greek is a growing, proudly Midlands-based producer of authentic Greek yoghurt and handcrafted cheeses.
We are looking for an experienced Operations Manager to help lead our people and coordinate the daily operation of our production facility.
This is a newly created position for someone who enjoys working in a busy food environment, developing teams and making sure that plans, standards and responsibilities are followed through consistently.
The role
The Operations Manager will be responsible for coordinating the day-to-day flow of work across production and back-of-house operations.
Working closely with our managers, supervisors and team leaders, you will help ensure that people are properly organised, trained and supported, that departments work together effectively, and that operational problems and queries are dealt with promptly.
A background in catering, food service, commercial kitchens, hospitality operations or food production could be particularly well suited to this role.
The environment requires many of the same strengths: managing a busy team, coordinating competing priorities, maintaining hygiene and quality standards, training employees and responding calmly when plans change or problems arise.
Key responsibilities
Coordinate daily operational priorities across production and back-of-house activities.
Ensure that production plans and responsibilities are clearly communicated and followed through.
Support managers, supervisors and team leaders in organising and managing their teams.
Train and coach employees to improve performance, capability and accountability.
Monitor workflow between production, stock control, packing and dispatch.
Deal with day-to-day operational queries, challenges and staff matters.
Identify problems early and ensure they are resolved or escalated appropriately.
Improve productivity and reduce avoidable delays, waste, rework and errors.
Help maintain appropriate standards of conduct, attendance and workplace discipline.
Support compliance with food-safety, hygiene, quality and health-and-safety requirements.
Introduce clear routines, controls and follow-up systems.
Provide concise operational feedback and reporting to the Managing Director.
Help build a positive and respectful working culture in which people take ownership of their responsibilities.
Who we are looking for
The successful candidate should have:
Meaningful experience managing people in a busy operational environment.
Experience in catering, food service, commercial kitchens, hospitality operations, food production or a similar environment.
A proven ability to train, coach and develop employees.
Strong organisational, communication and problem-solving skills.
A practical, hands-on management style.
The confidence to set clear expectations and hold people accountable respectfully.
The ability to manage competing priorities and respond constructively under pressure.
Good attention to detail and consistent follow-through.
An understanding of hygiene, food safety and workplace standards.
Basic computer literacy and the ability to work with schedules, records and reports.
Experience in dairy or cheese production would be advantageous, but it is not essential. We are primarily looking for a capable people manager who can bring structure, consistency and strong operational leadership to a growing business.
Location requirement
This is a fully on-site position at our facility in Lions River, KZN Midlands.
Applicants must live within reasonable commuting distance or have firm plans to relocate to the area. Remote or hybrid working is not possible for this role.
What we offer
An important role in a growing South African food business.
The opportunity to shape and take ownership of a newly created position.
A hands-on environment where your contribution will have a visible impact.
The opportunity to work with a team passionate about producing exceptional yoghurt and cheese.
Scope to grow with the business as our operation continues to expand.
Remuneration aligned with experience and suitability for the role.
